Media Trash documentation

Deleted images and files go to the trash instead of disappearing permanently, so you can restore them if they were still in use.

Overview

Deleting from the media library is permanent by default. One wrong click removes an image from every page that used it, with no undo.

Plan: Pro. Requires an active WP Extended Pro licence.

Setup

  1. Go to WP Extended in your WordPress admin and find Media Trash under Media Tools.
  2. Switch Media Trash on.
  3. There is nothing to configure. The module works as soon as it is on.

Questions and troubleshooting

Is Media Trash free?

No. It is part of WP Extended Pro.

How does it work?

It switches on WordPress’s own MEDIA_TRASH setting by adding it to wp-config.php for you, so the file must be writable. Switching the module off sets it back to false. On multisite, only a Super Admin can switch it on, because the setting applies to the whole network.

Can I do this without a plugin?

Yes, by editing wp-config.php yourself. Our guide to adding a media library trash shows both ways.

It isn’t working as expected

Check the module is switched on and its settings are saved. If another plugin does the same job, deactivate one of them. Then clear any page cache and test again. Still stuck? Pro customers can contact support; free users can post on the WordPress.org forum.
