Classic Widgets documentation

Switch Appearance → Widgets back to the classic drag-and-drop screen that most themes and widget plugins were built for.

Overview

The block-based widgets editor changed how sidebars and footers are edited. Many themes and widget plugins still expect the classic screen.

Plan: Free. Everything on this page is in the free plugin.

Setup

  1. Go to WP Extended in your WordPress admin and find Classic Widgets under Content Management.
  2. Switch Classic Widgets on.
  3. There is nothing to configure. The module works as soon as it is on.

Questions and troubleshooting

Is Classic Widgets free?

Yes. It is in the free plugin, with no settings to configure. Switch it on and the classic screen returns.

Is there another way to restore classic widgets?

Yes, with the official plugin or one line of code. Our guide to restoring classic widgets compares the options.

It isn’t working as expected

Check the module is switched on and its settings are saved. If another plugin does the same job, deactivate one of them. Then clear any page cache and test again. Still stuck? Pro customers can contact support; free users can post on the WordPress.org forum.
